In the first of a series on the retail centre of Downham Market, this article looks at the High Street.

Situated to the east of the town hall, our High Street runs north-south, split by Bridge Street at the Town Clock the one way system forks along to Lynn Road to the north and Priory Road to the south. And access is additionally gained from Paradise Road, Wales Court and Rampant Horse Lane. A historic street the high street contains a some historic 'Gingerbread' buildings, an historic coaching inn where Charles I is reputed to have hidden, a possible Bishops Palace and the home of the engineer who drained the fens*.

But what of the services that are found on this street? Looking at planning use classifications belies the true mix of the High Street's retail outlets, restaurants, etc. Whether it's cycling equipment, a cup of coffee, art supplies, timber or a beauty treatment you are after you can find it on the High Street. An eclectic mix of friendly purveyors of goods and services awaits those who visit this shopping area.
And the High Street is also the gateway to other shops and services, be it on Paradise Road, Lynn Road, Bridge Street or Marchant Court. So come past the Town Hall to the 'east end' and explore the High Street.
